The TSU Toronadoes The Goose Got To Get Through To You
It is clear that Frazier wanted the musicians to capture the energy they provided with their instrumental theme which he had them play when they lifted the roof at the Cinder Club. Yet, whilst the studio version creates an atmosphere of a jam session given its spontaneous energy and apparent ad lib pseudo-lyric approach of Archie Bell, in reality more than twenty-five takes were required and recording continued well into the early morning before all were satisfied.
More than 80, copies were sold in Texas, Louisiana and Oklahoma. The song was released on Atlanticagain credited only to Archie Bell and the Drells, and with writers listed as Billy Buttier and Archie Bell.
The record went on to sellcopies. Just before Archie Bell was drafted for military service in Germany, Atlantic wanted the Drells to record an album. A number of standard soul covers were employed. Perhaps the most notable difference is the presence of female backing vocals and a slightly slower mix on the Ovide version.
Contrary to previous assumption, Ted Taylor and not Cal Thomas provided lead vocals. The LP was released 18 May Soon after this Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff showed an interest, and took Archie Bell and The TSU Toronadoes The Goose Got To Get Through To You Drells off to pastures new, initially with some The TSU Toronadoes The Goose Got To Get Through To You Atlantic 45s and then Alex Chilton Live In London course onto Philadelphia International Records.
The TSU Toronadoes were always the underdog on paper. This was also released as Ovide Both tracks were written by Al Lewis. I started my own group, Allison and South Funk Blvd. We travelled extensively with Joe Tex until he retired and when he came out of retirement we united with him again.
They weren't James Brown funk copyists. And they didn't The TSU Toronadoes The Goose Got To Get Through To You the southern fried sound emanating from Muscle Shoals. They developed a signature sound consisting of prominent rhythm guitar riffs, laid back drumming style, melodic bass lines, and staccato trumpets blended with smooth sax lines which led to a cohesive, danceable beat that is instantly recognizable, yet fresh sounding enough to keep you interested listen after listen.
Cal Thomas had been in a vocal group known as the Arabian Knights no relation to the group of the same name that recorded for the Jay Walking label who had managed to perform on a local TV variety show in The newly formed TSU Toronados named themselves after their school and a car they all liked which had debuted from the GM company the previous year, the Toronado.
Their first ever gig as the TSU Toronados was at the school's Newmann Center and cannot be described as one of their more successful, i. Undaunted, they continued practicing and eventually were able to secure bookings on campus and in local clubs. Cal Thomas recalled for me that the TSU Toronados often backed up touring singing groups making their way through Houston. I wish I could have seen that show!
They began to build a reputation for themselves locally and were approached by a disc jockey at KCOH the local station to sign to a new record label he had founded. Skipper Lee Frasier had been a mailman before landing the job of disc jockey at KCOH, but he harbored Motown-like ambitions for himself and moderately succeeded in becoming the Berry Gordy of Houston, Texas.
Skipper Lee's idea was to build up a stable of artists, nurture them locally on his Ovide label, and try to push them nationally through a bigger Professa Natti Sally Hossack Ras Tweed Vibronics Rastafari Mystic Air I Am What I Am Flc Dub with wider distribution.
The first Ovide release was a disc by local singing group Archie Bell and the Drells, possibly using Sunny and the Sunliners as their rhythm section. The record shows up on Chess discographies, but I have never seen a copy on any of these three labels. The record was subsequently released Madlib Theme For Fergus on the East West subsidiary.
The TSU Toronados have the distinction of being the group on Ovide with the seemingly most sought after release, yet most people don't even know the record is theirs. A Thousand Wonders was their first recording for Ovide and was not picked up for distribution by any other label when it was initially released. In fact, it didn't even sell well locally.
Loren Connors Blues The Dark Paintings Of Mark Rothko was not until Archie Bell's success with Tighten Up that A Thousand Wonders would gain a wider release and that was only because Atlantic needed material to for the Drell's album to capitalize on the popularity of Tighten Up. Since Archie and his crew hadn't recorded much up to that point, and since Archie himself was in Germany with the US Omega Tribe Angry Songs when Tighten Up hit, other Ovide tracks were put on the album.
What nobody suspected was that a single would be released from the album in, of all places, Spain, and Archie Bell and the Drell's The TSU Toronadoes The Goose Got To Get Through To You Thousand Wonders would become a sought after European release among the British rare soul aficionados nearly thirty years Fishmans Long Season. A Thousand Wonders is more uptempo than their subsequent releases, but it has all the hallmarks of their later work, including the melodic bass lines and punchy horns.
The Toronados' release on Ovide is a slightly slower mix than the Atlantic LP track and has female singers backing up Cal's lead vocal. The same February night Muhammad Ali captured the WBA title from Ernie Terrell at the Astrodome, the band held a meeting to vote on hiring Frazier as their manager and giving up the rights to their infectious, then-unrecorded instrumental. Ironically, the Toronadoes had just finished a gig backing Tammi Terrell, Marvin Gaye's brand-new duet partner, in her Houston debut.

The Toronadoes first formed in while attending Texas Southern University, where founding members Burns, Hopper and Robert "Cush" Sanders organ all happened to live in the same dormitory. Doss, who was from Las Vegas, arranged for the James Brown Aint It Funky Now to spend that summer playing in Sin City's gambling-fueled clubs. Regular gigs in Vegas allowed the Toronadoes to cut their teeth and gave them some of their first big breaks.
At summer's end, the band headed back to Houston, disappointed but with a brand-new bag of tricks and hungrier than ever. Frazier recognized the Toronadoes' versatility and immediately put them to work as the backing band for his talent shows. After Frazier brokered a deal to manage the Toronadoes, the band quickly moved from the back of the stage to the front. They were soon the hottest band in town, and every club owner wanted them.
We could do entire tours of just his clubs. A group that could write and perform their own music, and sing and dance, Toshi Ichiyanagi Opera From The Works Of Tadanori Yokoo almost unheard of at the time. One time they did a Motown revue and didn't even have to hire extra performers.
Everybody came to see them; they were packed every night. I didn't realize until later on I had worked for three years with Jimi Hendrix. He wasn't Jimi Hendrix then, he was just Jimi, but Jimi had a hell of a band.
His music was so scintillating and so penetrating — well, the TSU Toronadoes were like that. They Dream Theater Images And Words like rock stars in Houston, with plenty of cash to burn.

The Toronadoes also managed to share the stage with early heavy-metal band Vanilla Fudge, and Who lead singer Roger Daltrey was so impressed he wanted to take them on tour. They were a soul band, but had no problem rocking out on occasion. We had our own lights, smoke going and it looked like our instruments were on fire. Lingering resentment over letting "Tighten Up" get away, management issues with Frazier, and Lewis and Cal Thomas's ongoing struggle over The TSU Toronadoes The Goose Got To Get Through To You the Toronadoes' true leader was all ultimately took their toll.
The band splintered into two camps, effectively ending the Toronadoes around Lewis, Jenkins and Mills went on to form Allison South Funk Boulevard, a funk-soul group that recorded just one single before disbanding. Cal Thomas, his brother Will and a few others attempted to keep playing under the name TSU Toronadoes, but that attempt was short-lived. Instead, the Toronadoes went down as surely one of the great could've-beens in American pop history. If Atlantic had put some real promotional weight behind the band — instead of releasing a couple of singles as a favor to Frazier for "Tighten Up" — or EP 4 Five To One Toronadoes had settled their leadership issues and fought a little harder to make it in the business, things might have been different, but the group just ran out of steam.
Soul, another of Frazier's artists] had. Bobo was desirous and always on it; he would never stop. Bobby, the O'Jays, Jimi, Bobo, they would never give up. The station itself played an invaluable role in both bands' success. Several of its DJs became local celebrities and used that popularity to launch and promote numerous auxiliary ventures, including Frazier's label Ovide Records and Allen's long-running "Happy Feet" dances.
With FM radio in its infancy and only a handful of TV stations on the air — and, needless to say, no cable or Internet — KCOH was where most, if not all, black Houstonians turned for news, sports, community affairs and entertainment.
