The Brothers Sisters Dylans Gospel
Rape, murder was absolutely just a shot away. Clayton's faith in the political messages her voice could convey to listeners was so immense that in she sang on Lynyrd Skynyrd's controversial Sweet Home Alabamaa song she actively disagreed with. Approached by fellow backing singer Clydie King, she agreed on one condition.
They have the nerve to sing Sweet Home Alabama! That's the white interpretation Climaco Sarmiento y su Orquesta Bombo Y Maracas Alabama. It's not sweet home to black people! It's not sweet home at all. We're going to sing it like a protest song. We were singing it through our teeth, like we were really angry: We're going to sing your song, honey, but not because we want to — because it's necessary.
The invitation from King was typical. Although backing singers were technically competing for work, Clayton talks of a "sisterhood" of allies who helped each The Brothers Sisters Dylans Gospel get jobs.
They didn't have formal representation. They took care of each other. So the Dylan's Gospel sessions in June were something of a love-in. Adler and Page arranged the seats in Hollywood's Sound Recorders Studios to resemble church The Brothers Sisters Dylans Gospel, laid on ample refreshments and invited A-list friends such as Carole King and John Phillips to drop in. When we finished, Lou bought a case of champagne and we'd sit down and drink and talk and have dessert Gary Marks Gathering listen to the record.
It was the fellowship, that's what I loved. Unfortunately, Dylan's Gospel came out just as Adler's Ode Records was changing Ennio Morricone Paura Vol 2 A Collection Of Scary Thrilling Soundtracks so it fell through the cracks despite warm reviews.
Even more disappointing to him was the fate of the excellent solo albums he produced for Clayton in the early 70s. We tried. Maybe there was only room on Top 40 radio for one Aretha Franklin at that time. That's the only thing I can come up with. This is formally the same kind of record as, say, a set of Imagine Dragons songs arranged as lullabiesrather than a direct antecedent to the terrific The Brothers Sisters Dylans Gospel Gotta Serve Somebody: The Gospel Songs of Bob Dylan.
That said, it's way better than it has a right to be: it's always at least interesting, and often pretty delightful. If you didn't catch the words, Dylan's Gospel could pass as a solidly played, splendidly sung "contemporary gospel" record, and if you can overlook the choir keeping a straight face as they raise the roof about "her fog, her amphetamine, and her pearls", it can pass as that even if you do catch the words. By the time Adler's choir assembled, Dylan was still a decade Jorge Santana Darling I Love You Sandy from writing overtly Christian songs, but he'd internalized the whole The Brothers Sisters Dylans Gospel songbook by the time he started writing his own stuff: the language of "Chimes of Freedom" and "The Times They Are A-Changin'" makes the stylistic transition beautifully.
His lyrics were also open wide enough to interpretation that it wasn't hard to come up with a reading of, say, "The Mighty Quinn" as an impassioned if slightly eccentric parable about Christ's return, which is exactly how the great Merry Clayton delivers it here. A few iffy aspects of the project reveal The Brothers Sisters Dylans Gospel origins as a cash-in. The vocalists are credited in a list, but the lead singers weren't initially identified as such—"because of contractual obligations," Adler claimed to Rolling Stone at the time.
