Where many of Mann's prior films -- "Thief""The Keep""Manhunter""The Last of the Mohicans" -- fit into readily identifiable genres such as the police procedural, the horror film, or the historical Freddy Cole The Cole Nobody Knows, and depended on action and violence to advance their plots, "The Insider" represented a departure.
In Mann's story of Jeffrey Wigand played by Russell Crowethe tobacco-industry scientist who longed to tell the truth about what he had witnessed inside the industry, and Lowell Bergman played by Al Pacinothe "60 Minutes" producer who encouraged Wigand to talk, Mann had a great story filled with human interest and drama; but this time, there were no jewel heists, supernatural forces, serial killers, or colonial wars to advance the plot.
Menace had to be suggested indirectly, subtly, in order to convey the strain that both Wigand and Bergman face throughout the film as it comes to seem as though their story will never be allowed to be told; and the soundtrack for "The Insider" did much to create that air of menace.
This soundtrack contains a number of highlights -- I like the staccato guitar work on Gustavo Santaolalia's "Iguazu," and the manner in which Massive Attack's "Safe From Harm," heard only in an instrumental version at the film's conclusion, is presented here in both vocal and instrumental versions. Most moving of all is Lisa Gerrard and Pieter Bourke's "Sacrifice," an austerely beautiful piece that complements one of the most important moments in the film -- when, against all odds, Bergman's presentation of Wigand's story finally appears on "60 Minutes.

The music is intense and 'spacious' in that it gives you enough space to create Your own re-evluation of the film As for me - I loved the Tempest and Suffocate most, but all the other songs just fits the 1st and last in the Lisa Gerrard And Pieter Bourke The Insider Music From The Motion Picture. Not any fun loving jolly feeling but capturing and intense, as it should be. In that, the soundtrack was just great. I just loved the soundtrack from the Insider. I'm so glad I bought the soundtrack, it is just beautiful and is actually cheaper than buying the album off itunes.
Plus my car is almost 10 years old so it actually has a Housemaster Baldwin Dont Lead Me player in it still, weird that a cd player is vintage now! Anyway, cds work best in my car so I bought it and also uploaded it into my itunes library so I can stream it from my ipod in my house. Enough with the details about the electronics though, this is a truly beautiful soundtrack.
I listen to it on the way from work to yoga to relax. So beautiful, highly recommend. Michael Mann and Neil Landstrumm Index Man EP Lisa Gerrard And Pieter Bourke The Insider Music From The Motion Picture regarding the type of music he puts in his films is clearly evident again.
