Unlike their prior effort eight years before, the sprawling and eclectic Bridges to Babylon, which had a bewildering array of producers, musical styles, and guest musicians, the Stones set out The Rolling Stones Goats Head Soup make a basic, hard rock album that hearkened back to their s heyday.
A single producer, Don Was, was brought in to co-produce the album alongside the band's principle songwriting The Rolling Stones Goats Head Soup production team of vocalist Mick Jagger and Keith Richards. Joining the two were band members Ronnie Wood on guitar and Charlie Watts on drums, contract players Darryl Jones on bass and Chuck Leavell on keyboards, and multi-instrumentalist Matt Clifford.

Released as a double album on vinyl and a single CD, the album was supported by the year-long worldwide Bridges to Babylon Tour that met with much success. Unlike the prior several LaJohn Sheela Every Bodys Problem, which the production and songwriting team of vocalist Mick Jagger and guitarist Keith Richards had co-produced alongside a single producer, the group brought in an eclectic mix of superstar producers, including the Dust Brothers, Don Was, and Dead Prez Lets Get Free Fraboni among others.
Similarly, a wide array of guest musicians appeared on each of the tracks alongside band members Jagger, Richards, Ronnie Wood and Charlie Watts. The sprawling album features a wide range of genres, including the Stones-standard blues rock, sample-laden hip hop and rap. The band was once again not on speaking terms during the recording of the album, with Jagger and Richards each recording their parts separately and rarely appearing in the studio together.
They had, however, repaired their relationship well enough to embark on a wildly successful tour to support the album. But it is strictly one of a kind, for after it Soup emerges as a consistent piece of work, even if its classic moments are confined to four songs.
In the process of juxtaposing opposites, the Stones make a partly practical and partly moral choice — The Rolling Stones Goats Head Soup of survival over dissipation. It relates an incident of big-city violence hardly uncommon in the real world, but jarring in this context. It works as both thematic and stylistic counterpoint.
