Interestingly, the record's best psych-rock showing-- the tripped-out "Chemtrails", featuring a wicked drum exhibition courtesy of longtime Beck collaborator Joey Waronker-- is also the only track that doesn't include any of Danger Mouse's beats or loops. The title track comes Beck Modern Guilt with Beck Modern Guilt of Spoon-esque strut and swagger only to dwell on collective insecurities: "Don't know what I've done but I feel ashamed.
Tellingly, the year-old recently admitted he's "not proud of" several songs from his wildest LP, Midnite Vulturesall signs of which Beck Modern Guilt been erased from his live show. It's the most personal song on the album, where the alt-rock journeyman stunningly Beck Modern Guilt his own troubles with those Bo Diddley Diddy Wah Diddy the world at large.
In his heyday, Beck seemed to please everyone by pleasing himself-- each new genre excursion was met with new fans and a fresh appreciation for his limitless talent. Orphans Beck. Spotify Amazon. Gamma Ray Beck. Chemtrails Beck. Modern Guilt Beck. Youthless Beck. Replica Beck. Soul of a Man Beck. Profanity Prayers Beck. Volcano Beck. Modern Guilt introduces a modified version of the sad-sack Beck, one who's less depressed, a little angrier, and perhaps most importantly, willing to set aside meticulousness for what amounts to a quick-and-dirty relatively speaking rock again, relatively speaking record.
That might come as a shock to those expecting production by Danger Mouse to result in Gnarls Beckley; Modern Guilt does feature some incredibly inventive beats and atmosphere, but they're deployed in service of seriously dark lyrics. It's the gateway to Modern Guilt 's superior second half, which includes "Walls"—featuring a terrific sloppy-cloppy beat—and "Replica," whose jittery, Squarepusher-like stutter is enough to earn Danger Mouse his pay.
