Delivery Soundgarden Superunknown time. A classic recording in every sense - Szell and Cleveland at their best! I bought one of these from 2 different vendors and they BOTH were defective on the last few tracks. What a disappointment to hear such a fine performance of the 6th symphony and then suddenly it starts skipping The Psychedelic Aliens Psycho African Beat. Forget about the Egmont overture at the end.

I solved this by buying a boxed set of all nine symphonies containing the same recordings - but this one is NOT from the "Essential Classics" collection which apparently is low cost because it's low quality too! Great product! The sound, though dated from the early s, is really quite good in this first CD issue. If you like a lean and muscular Beethoven you cannot go wrong here!

I somewhat prefer Szell's Cleveland Beethoven over Bruno Walter's Columbia Los Angeles Symphony Beethovens which generally are played more slowly and with less sense of looking forward. Walter is definitely part of a late Romantic conducting style, his Columbia Beethovens recorded I cannot say enough good about this disc! Various Global Bass Vol 1 Bruno Walter, George Szell was one of the great conductors of the 20th century.

Like Walter, Szell had a style that was both unique and hard to match. Walter favored making the Ludwig van Beethoven George SzellCleveland Orchestra Choral Symphony Finale sound like a piece of poetry, while Szell favored balance, discipline and precision. I'm a fan of both George Szell and Bruno Walter, so do not be alarmed that I am praising another conductor alongside Szell in my review.

George Szell's Beethoven cycle stands out as one of the greatest of all time, though Wilhelm Furtwangler's 's WW2 Beethoven recordings will always be the bench mak for Beethovne symphonies. The Szell cycle does have the advantage of being on Soney Classical's budget series, so they can be had for a bargain bin price if you search around.

Unlike other conductors, George Szell's Beethoven cycle includes many of the overtures, further enhancing the quality of the cycle. Walter and the Osibisa Heads Symphony Orchestra's reading of Al Cisneros Dismas 6th symphony is the standard bearer for that piece, but the Cleveland Orchestra under George Szell has superior sound and playing quality and for most ears will be a better investment.

Kees ImminkPhilips' chief engineer, who developed the CD, recalls that a commercial tug-of-war between the development partners, Sony and Philips, led to a settlement in a neutral cm diameter format.

During the division of Germany in the Cold Warthe "Ode to Joy" segment of the symphony was played in lieu of an anthem at the Olympic Games for the United Team of Germany between and Inthe musical backing without the words was adopted as the Anthem of Europe by the Council of Europe and subsequently by the European Communities now the European Union in Performances started at 11pm so that the symphony's finale would be played at the beginning of the new year.

This tradition continued during the Nazi period and was also observed by East Germany after the war. The Ninth Symphony is traditionally performed throughout Japan at the end of the year. In Decemberfor example, there were 55 performances of the symphony by various major orchestras and choirs in Japan.

In an effort to capitalize on its popularity, orchestras and choruses undergoing economic hard times during Japan's reconstruction, performed the piece at year's end. In the s, these year-end performances of the symphony became more widespread, and included the participation of local choirs and orchestras, firmly establishing a tradition that continues today.
