Like her husband, Alice Coltrane was a spiritual seeker; not long after his death, she met Swami Satchidananda — the guru who opened the Woodstock festival — and became his disciple. Her own compositional language evolved during those years into an intoxicating, highly unusual blend of jazz, blues and Indian instruments and tonalities.

Her life as a spiritual leader also grew during those years, and she founded The Vedanta Center in Coltrane's life took another sharp turn when, intheir eldest son, John Jr. With her religious beliefs for sustenance after that tragedy and with a growing following of her own, she founded the Sai Anantam Ashram the following year, which became a acre compound in Agoura Hills, Calif. Despite Coltrane's withdrawal from her secular career, music Alice Coltrane The Ecstatic Music Of Alice Coltrane Turiyasangitananda still at the heart of her religious practice.

Even the Hindu name she took on — Alice Coltrane The Ecstatic Music Of Alice Coltrane Turiyasangitananda — has music embedded in its core. Sangitor sangeetis "music" in Sanskrit; she translated her adopted name Grupo Afro Cuba Dile Que Vuelvo "the transcendental lord's highest song of bliss.

It was a good match between spirit and spiritual path. In the Hindu tradition, the entire universe — the cycles of birth, life, destruction, silence and renewal — are all encompassed with the sound of "aum" or "om," Alice Coltrane The Ecstatic Music Of Alice Coltrane Turiyasangitananda it's more commonly transliterated into English — and there is a deep, long tradition of expressing love for the divine through songs, whether bhajans individual songs of devotionkirtans call-and-response worship songs or Sounds Of Liberation Sounds Of Liberation in the classical tradition, in which ancient devotional poems are the texts for sung ragas.

In the music she created for her religious community, Coltrane — unsurprisingly — did not simply mimic Indian tradition when it came to singing praises to Hindu deities at her ashram's mandir, or temple. She created something wholly new, and completely her own. The most amazing aspect of this music is what few have heard Pangaea Two Mixes Coltrane 's very deep and physical singing voice; her lead vocals are featured on most of the album, and it's another instrument she commands though she wouldn't see it that way.

On "Om Shanti," she accompanies herself on organ using breath control in an airy, devoted chant. On "Rama Rama," sarod, tablas, and her Oberheim synth add blissful dimensions to her quietly passionate singing. The first half of "Journey in Satchidananda" features only her organ and Oberheim. It's droning, bluesy, and heavy -- nearly Gothic. When the Ashram Singers come in and Joshua Spiegelman adds a flute, some light enters.

Tamil singer Sairam Iyer solos in his own language, opening the heart of the chant and bringing it home. Harp makes its presence felt on "Er Ra," Paul McCartney Off The Ground Coltrane 's playing moves across Eastern and Western modes as her singing emerges in sweet, blues-inflected lines. Luaka Bop did everything right for The Ecstatic Music of Alice Coltrane Turyirasangitanandafrom getting full participation from her family to create an amazing package with a great long essay by Ashley Khanto reminiscences, to excellent sound.
