Herbie Hancock Mwandishi
All are presented here in their entirety, with copious notes by Bob Blumenthalwho interviewed Hancock for the package. The set begins with the wildly joyous, deep, funky groove of Fat Albert's Groove, the music Hancock recorded for Bill Cosby 's Saturday morning cartoon show.
These seven tracks, with their three-horn front line originated for Hancock on his final Blue Note album, Speak Like a Child of Joe Henderson on flute and tenor, Johnny Coles ' trumpet, and Garnett Brown 's trombone, are singing, lyrical funk grooves that predated Headhunters by a few years and swung way harder by sticking back and lying in the groove as much as possible. Hancock 's electric piano teamed with Tootie Heath and Buster Williams to form Herbie Hancock Mwandishi unbeatable, gutsy, and stomping rhythm section.
The band was fleshed out on a couple of tracks by additional horns, additional drums and percussion, and electric guitars. After such a melodic entry, Warners' Herbie Hancock Mwandishi must have been shocked when Hancock brought them the abstract funkified impressionism of his emerging Mwandishi band on its selftitled offering. Comprised of three long tracks, the album showcased Hancock 's use of free jazz and long intervallic inventions on modal frames.
Only Buster Williams remained from the previous set. This final record sank from the market like a stone; it found some success Herbie Hancock Mwandishi year later, after Hancock had moved to Columbia, to issue Sextant and then Headhunters. Crossings melds street music, modal jazz and the expansive sonic approach of Sun Ra fom this same period; it's approach keeps jazz close to the street while fully exploring the varying tonal and rhythmic changes that were going on post-Coltrane.
Again, only three tracks appear, though the first is a long, brazen expressionistic suite "Sleeping Giant". It is one of Hancock's first departures from the traditional idioms of jazz as well as the onset of a new, creative and original style which produced an appeal to a wider audience, before his album, Head Hunters. It was originally recorded by the Mwandishi Sextet Herbie Hancock Mwandishi was built around Herbie Hancock and progressive notions of funk, jazz, and rock during this time period.
Mwandishi is a Swahili name Hancock adopted during the late s and early s. Recordings in  and as The Warner Bros. Years in . Hancock's next album, Dis Is da Drumreleased insaw him return to acid jazz. Hancock also achieved great success in with his album Gershwin's Worldwhich featured Dr Feelgood Stupidity of George and Ira Gershwin standards by Hancock and a plethora of guest stars, including Wonder, Herbie Hancock Mwandishi Mitchell and Shorter.
Hancock later toured with the band, and released a concert DVD with a different lineup, which also included the Stone Circus Stone Circus music video.
The threesome toured to support the album, and toured on-and-off through The year saw the release of a duet album called Possibilities. Also in Hancock toured Herbie Hancock Mwandishi with a new quartet that included Beninese guitarist Lionel Loueke Herbie Hancock Mwandishi, and explored textures ranging from ambient to straight jazz to African music. This lineup did not consist of any of the original Headhunters musicians. Hancock also served as the Herbie Hancock Mwandishi artist in residence for Bonnaroo that Herbie Hancock Mwandishi.
This set was the first compilation of his work at Warner Bros. It is featured on Groban's CD Awake. Hancock, a longtime associate and friend of Mitchell, released a album, River: The Joni Lettersthat paid tribute to her work, with Norah Jones and Tina Turneradding vocals to the album,  as did Corinne Bailey Rae. Leonard Cohen contributed a spoken piece set to Hancock's piano.
Mitchell herself also made an appearance. The album was released on September 25,simultaneously with the release of Mitchell's newest album at that time: Shine. That was only the second time in history that a jazz album had both those Grammys. Hancock was named as the Los Angeles Philharmonic 's creative chair for jazz for — In a June interview with Michael Gallant of Keyboard magazine, Hancock talks about his Fazioli giving him inspiration to do things.
