Kenny Burrell with Art Blakey At The Five Spot Cafe

Download Kenny Burrell with Art Blakey At The Five Spot Cafe

Of particularly grating annoyance Kenny Burrell with Art Blakey At The Five Spot Cafe the solo work of Timmons on "Lady Be Good" Roland Hanna fares a little better because of his understated style but these tracks suffer from an out of balance overamplified Blakey who seems to be having an off night particularly on the "Beef Stew Blues" cut.

Blakey sounds as if he is struggling to find a direction and the high hat work is aimless, grating and distracting. Tina Brooks' work on cuts is particularly pedestrian and uninspired to the point where I just had to turn the CD off after a few choruses.

This is a very disappoiunting effort and certainly does not greatly contribute to the recorded legacy of Burrell. None of the musicians communicate any fire or enthusiasm and the entire set conveys boredom. The owners at the Five Spot should have definitely had the piano tuned or replaced since it seems to be a commmon thread on several records that I have listened to which were recorded there. The Dolphy at the Five Spot sets come to mind because they are destroyed by the horrible sound that Mal Waldron is forced to cope with on the club's horrific piano.

This Burrell record should have just stayed in the can and been buried in obscurity. An absolutely dreadful record not even worth having in a decent jazz collection. Don't buy this one. Mike Tarrani Top Contributor: Drums. Format: Audio CD. This is an accidental find for me. It's also a treasure. Before I get into the details, check out the sound samples - those convey more about the music than I can possibly describe in words.

The main tracks are from sets 2 through 5, all recorded on August 25, There are personnel changes between sets, so here is Kenny Burrell with Art Blakey At The Five Spot Cafe line up for each track. Tracks 1 and 2 are from the second set and feature Tina Brooks on tenor sax and Bobby Timmons on piano with the core ensemble. 1. Kenny Burrell and Art Blakey played together infrequently during their careers, so this meeting of jazz minds is a welcome occasion. A rather short set issued here from club dates at the Five Spot Cafe in New York City must have meant there were other nights of recordings that did not make it for public consumption, or that Burrell simply sat in/5(12).

  9. May 03,  · At The Five Spot Café captures a remarkable jam-paced when Burrell and Blakey are joined to the hilt alongside other jazz players, notably Bobby Timmons (during one half of the album) and Sir Roland Hanna (on the other half) at the piano, while session musicians, Tina Brooks on tenor saxophone and bassist Ben Tucker, give/5(12).
